Eravikulam and the Nilgiri tahr

A Nilgiri tahr standing by a mountain road in Eravikulam National Park

On the slopes of Anamudi, the highest peak in South India, Eravikulam National Park protects the Nilgiri tahr, the wild goat of these hills. It is one of the places our guests ask about most.

When it is open

The park is open from the second week of April to the end of January. It is worth booking your tickets in advance, especially at weekends and in the holidays.

What you will see

Open grassland and rock rising towards Anamudi, and the tahr themselves, often grazing close to the path. Keep a respectful distance and keep your voice down; they are wild animals.

Making a day of it

Eravikulam lies on the road towards Marayoor. Combine it with Lakkam waterfalls, the sandalwood forest at Marayoor and the sanctuary at Chinnar, as on day three of our five-day plan. Our travel desk can arrange a cab and a guide.
